Welcome to Year 1! We have two Year 1 classes at St Mary Cray; Ms Mills is our Pearl Class teacher and in Opal Class we have a job-share team of two experienced teachers, Mrs Wright and Mrs Reynolds. We work closely with each other as well as our Professional Teaching Partners Mrs Boyd, Miss Rawlings and Miss Charlesworth. In our classrooms we strive to offer rich and inspiring learning environments. We are devoted to giving pupils a fun, broad and engaging curriculum that will be seen both indoors and out.
In Year 1 we follow the Core Curriculum when teaching foundation subjects such as History and Geography. In Literacy we use Read Write Inc and elements of the Power of Reading. We follow the Maths Mastery scheme in Numeracy. We put our pupils at the centre of our curriculum and always start with the child when planning; using the children’s previous knowledge, experiences and interests to motivate, challenge and engage them.
Outdoor Learning forms an integral part of our pupils' learning at St Mary Cray Primary Academy. Children have access to a trim trail, large grassy field, allotment and, via our partner school, a swimming pool and Forest School.
A message from Mrs Reynolds:
I am thrilled to be teaching Year 1 alongside Mrs Wright again this year. This is my second year at St Mary Cray and I have been teaching in and around London for many years. I am originally from Vancouver, Canada and I like celebrating different parts of the world in my teaching.
One of my hobbies is reading and I always have a book (or two!) on the go at home. I love sharing stories with the class and talking about our favourite books. In Diamond class we explore a wide variety of books including picture books, non-fiction texts and even short novels.
A message from Mrs Wright:
I am excited to be teaching Year 1 with Mrs Reynolds. This is my sixth year at SMCPA and I love it here at our school. I have been teaching for many years and have taught in central London and locally. I am also originally from Canada but have lived a few different places around the world.
I also enjoy reading, with a child at home lately it has been more children's books I have been reading but I do love the classics! Like Mrs Reynolds said we aim for fun, interesting and creative learning in our classroom.
Our door is always open if there is anything you would like to discuss.
A Message From Miss Mills:
I have been teaching at St Mary Cray for many years now, and I have seen many children grow from strength to strength and make outstanding progress. If children have a good start to school life then it sets them up well for the future! I have worked in EYFS as well as years 1, 2, and 3 and I am delighted to be teaching in Pearl Class this year.
I am very passionate about teaching children to read. We use Read Write Inc Phonics which enables children to build confidence and learn at their own pace. They will learn the sounds, blending the sounds to read words such as: dog, cat, pat and then they will learn to read sentences! The children will have the opportunity to have a lot of stories read to them as well as share their own favourite stories!
This will be an amazing start to school life for the children and I am sure they will enjoy learning lots of new skills. We have a holistic approach to teaching and learning, we encourage the children to believe in themselves and develop a love for learning.
My door is always open if you need to speak to me about anything!
Don't forget you can also keep up to date with your child's progress and what's going on via ClassDojo.
