Red Word Walls

As we teach Read Write Inc. Phonics, we teach children about "red words"!

Most words can be sounded out phonetically, such as the word "cat". We "Fred-talk" the sounds in the word into "c - a - t" . We can then blend the sounds together into "cat".

Some words cannot be Fred-talked and we call these "red words". We need to learn to recognise, read and know these words by sight.

Below are our red word walls that show the most common and useful words to learn. Children start by learning the words on word wall 1 and we read these together in class. Children then continue to work through learning these words on the word walls ready for Year 1 to help with reading and writing.
